Australian Red Cross, Fitzroy

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP

Description

Another delightful offering from the Australian Red Cross – you would never guess that this fabulous little vintage shop is not for profit.  I’m guessing this Red Cross outpost has the luxury of being more selective than other stores, and you get to reap the benefits.  Prices are higher than you would expect to find at your average op-shop, but I guess that’s the premium one must pay for the convenience and quality offered by the Red Cross on Brunswick Street.  The collection consists, predominantly of clothing, shoes, accessories, a smattering of homewares and some vinyl records thrown in for good measure.

Episode Vintage

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP

Description

I have walked passed this store a number of times but had never gone inside.  This was because I believed Episode stocked mostly new products, which was the case until recently.  Now, it seems, the folks at Episode have shifted their focus to selling solely vintage wears – very pleasing!  The collection at Episode Vintage is quite vast and includes men’s and women’s clothing (cycling tops, bomber jackets, leather jackets, shirts, skirts, dresses, jumpers, coats), bags, wallets, scarfs, shoes, homewares, sewing machines, hats and a small collection of furniture.  The rear of the store appears to be a work in progress but I’m sure that will be sorted out over the coming weeks/months as Episode transitions to full vintage mode.

You had better get in quick if you want to experience this delightful pop-up shop on Smith Street – it’s leaving in June!  This is the 3rd pop-up store created by the team and it is sure to impress.  Modern Times specialises in the importation of mid-century Danish furniture, which features prominently in the store alongside a selection of contemporary items created by local designers, such as the fabulously colourful crockery (see below).

All Aboard- Old Wares and Collectables

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP

Description

This secondhand emporium is off the beaten track but well worth a trip if you are looking for unusual collectables and homewares.  The collection is quite vast and is housed in and around three decommissioned tram carriages.  Stock includes vintage crockery, cutlery, scales, camping and military equipment, lamps, clocks, telephones, cabinets, mirrors, traffic lights, plumbing fixtures, hats, luggage, artwork, cast iron furniture, wagon wheels, globes, refrigerators, punch bowls (with matching cups and ladel – a personal favourite), as well as bizarre items such as 1920s gas masks and surprisingly beautiful meat safes.

Vinnies – Queenscliff

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP

Description

During a recent visit to Queenscliff I popped into the local Vinnies for a spot of Sunday op-shopping.  The stock here is well maintained and good quality with a solid collection of clothing, accessories, homewares, books, vinyl records and bric-a-brac.  Vinnies stores rely on donations, as such this store does not have the luxury of being selective with its stock, however there are definitely some gems to be found here – like the blue and white polka dot silk shirt a snapped up (see photo below).
