For those of you who missed the memo The Bar Dream is currently taking place on the level four of the iconic Carlton Hotel. For the month of July six small licensed spaces will be open to the public, making the dream of opening a bar a reality for six creative Melbournites. Each bar has a different theme, for the vintage lovers out there I’m guessing The Sandy Bunker will be the pick of the bunch with it’s 1920’s finery and delicious cocktails. Astor Productions, the team that brought you The Gatsby Winter and Gatsby Spring Soiree, is responsible for the creation of The Sandy Bunker. This glorious vintage cocktail lounge is full of old world charm and sure to impress!
Last night I had the pleasure of previewing the Mid Century Modern Australian Furniture Design exhibition at the NGV, Federation Square. Curator, Kirsty Grant, was kind enough to take a small group of us on a guided tour of this wonderful exhibition which showcases furniture by Australian designers from the 1940s through to the 1970s. The collection is emblematic of a post-war Australia where traditional, conservative approaches to furniture design gave way to more innovative, international styles.
Located in iconic Art Deco building, Mitchell House the Dames of Distinction are making a name for themselves as the go to girls for vintage styling. The Dames of Distinction are Margeaux, Jacinta and Hester. This delightful space houses a beauty parlour where you can be pampered by Margeaux who specialises in vintage hairstyling, hair setting and make-up or have your nails decorated with some of Hester’s beautiful nail art. If that wasn’t enough, Dames of Distinction stocks a collection of vintage and reproduction lingerie with resident lingerie expert Jacinta on hand to offer advice and fittings by appointment.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Dames of Distinction and the very lovely Jacinta was kind enough to answer a few questions for the vintage Melbourne readers.
