Description

You had better get in quick if you want to experience this delightful pop-up shop on Smith Street – it’s leaving in June!  This is the 3rd pop-up store created by the team and it is sure to impress.  Modern Times specialises in the importation of mid-century Danish furniture, which features prominently in the store alongside a selection of contemporary items created by local designers, such as the fabulously colourful crockery (see below).

Harry Wragg – Warehouse Sale

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP

Description

This Sunday I took a trip to Brunswick to check out Harry Wragg’s warehouse sale.  As you would expect, it was far less glamourous than their city store (recently reviewed on VM – Harry Wragg CBD).  Outside there were boxes of  stock at bargain prices, meanwhile inside things were far more organised, with racks full of stock at slightly higher prices but requiring far less rummaging.

Salvos – Victoria Street

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP

Description

The last time I visited this Salvos store on Victoria Street it appeared to be in dire need of some love and attention – which, thankfully, it now seems to be receiving.  During my visit there was a staff member dutifully attending to a bridal-wear display being set up in the window and general collection is carefully organised according to category.  The rear of this op-shop houses a large collection of secondhand furniture including mattresses, dressers, dining tables, desks, wardrobe… even some outdoor furniture.  The Salvos often have sales – all blue ticket items were half price  when I visited and children’s books were 99 cents each – bargain!

Smith Street Bazaar

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP

Description

Hello vintage furniture!  Smith Street Bazaar stocks a wide variety of furniture and homewares, specialising in mid 20th century pieces hand picked by an assortment of vendors who trade their wares in this marvellous, two tiered, vintage store.  The size of Smith Street Bazaar is not made apparent by its street frontage, this place extends deep into the block providing ample space for the abundance of beautiful stock.  On the second level you will also find a small selection of clothing and accessories, however the furniture is undeniably the star of the show.  From the ceiling hangs a sea of light fittings and almost every inch of floor space is filled with vintage gems.

Clearance Centre, Smith Street

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP

Description

This place is chaos!  There is no discernible order to the collection here with items strewn across this cavernous variety shop.  I use the term ‘variety’ as the Clearance Centre on Smith Street is not exclusively secondhand.  The collection of bikes that line the storefront hint at the farrago of objects inside this thrift store: bikes, books, wigs, luggage, vacuums, oriental fans, stereos, blenders, clothing, linen, toy, collectables, memorabilia, lamps, shopping trolleys, cassettes… even ice-skates!  There are heaps of bikes here, some don’t appear to be in working order however the man running the store seems adept at fixing them so if you are interested in a particular specimen it may be worthwhile talking to him.
