Description
St Mark’s Community Centre Opp Shop is a not for profit secondhand store on Smith Street. It has a wide range of stock, from clothes and accessories to camping mattresses to venetian blinds to light fittings to vinyl records. The quality of stock varies, but if you are seeking a diamond in the rough you just might find it here. The store itself fits into the no frills category but it is bright, clean and organised, what more could you want…

Little Prince offers a mixture of new and vintage stock with an emphasis on design and beautiful detailing. Considering the petit size of the store and abundance of stock it is surprising to discover a sense of calm inside Little Prince. The furniture in store has been sourced from around the globe; new, beautifully crafted, bespoke Japanese chest of drawers sit harmoniously next to English and Danish vintage buffets and cabinets. It seems that the price of larger items is negotiable so if you are interested in a particular piece it may be worth talking to the owner. At the time of my visit there were a couple of fantastic retro standing lamps (see photo below), some charming vases and collectables in the cabinet to the rear of the shop. Much of the new stock, in particular the stationary, is also quite lovely.

If you are in the market for some pre-loved accessories, look no further! The cabinets at Vintage Garage are sure to satisfy your hankering for retro jewellery, bags, shoes, hats, belts and homewares (notable offerings include a fondu set with original forks and burner). There is also a array of signage, curtain material, lamps and wall hangings for those interested in fitting out their home or business with vintage garb, a personal favourite was an Audrey Hepburn print (see photo below). In addition to the plethora of accessories is a vast collection of clothing – mostly women’s – including fur jackets, shrugs and wraps, bathers, dresses, cardigans, jackets, jumpers, shirts… etc. It really has to be seen to be believed. FYI – the men’s collection is due to arrive on the 9th of March 2012.

{also} is a not for profit organisation working to improve and enrich the lives of Victoria’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer communities. Their op shop on Smith Street has a great range of clothes – it’s one of the few vintage stores where the men’s garments out number the women’s – lots of jackets ($10) and shirts ($6). The collection of homewares may not be huge but there are some treasures here such as pattern making books, sheet music, some lovely crockery (see photo below), bags, ties, VHS (including Toy Story, Fantasia, The Princess Bride, The Lion King… all the classics) and the cheap prices mean you can but up big without having to live on a diet of chick peas and rice for the next month, unless you’re into that…
