Garage & sidewalk sales

On 27, Apr 2013 | One Comment | In $, 1, Carlton, Collingwood, Fitzroy, Massive, No Frills, Thornbury | By Rosie

Description

A curious phenomenon is taking place in the inner northern suburbs of Melbourne, and perhaps elsewhere.  I’m sure I’m not the only one who has noticed the increasing number of swap-meets, garage and sidewalk sales lining the pavements and median strip of these vibrant suburbs.  It seems that many Melbournians interested in recycling their worldly goods are opting to cut out the middle man (markets, op-shops and secondhand stores) and sell their wares directly to passing traffic.  Obviously the success of any such sale will likely be determined by the level of pedestrian (and  bicycle) traffic in the area.

Reclaimed

Description

If you head east down Johnston street from the vintage hub of Fitzroy you will happen upon Reclaimed, a fabulous collection of secondhand goods and furniture constructed from recycled materials.  The store is run by Rick and Jane, specialising in industrial and up-cycled homewares and furniture.  Rick custom makes tables from recycled timber – if you like furniture with texture and character these will be right up your alley.  The folks at Reclaimed also source large set lights which are then mounted on tripods to create wonderful and striking standing lamps.

Department of History

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP

Description

Department of History on High Street, Thornbury is a feast for the senses.  The music is rocking, the place smells like furniture polish and there are so many wonderful things to see and touch.  The only sense that misses out is taste, sadly I feel that licking the beautiful furniture might be frowned upon by the establishment… and probably wouldn’t taste very nice anyway.  This superb vintage store stocks a wide variety of wares from clothes to light fixtures, with stand out pieces including a massive timber desk with leather top in mint condition, loads of old magazines, fabulous glassware and old-school test tubes in timber holders (these were being used as vases in the store – very snazzy).

The Mill Market – Newcomb

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP

Description

I had driven past The Mill Market in Newcomb many times, for those of you who frequent the Bellarine peninsula you have most likely spotted the massive orange barn on the outskirts of Geelong.  It was only recently that I found time to pop in and rummage through what can only be described as a secondhand megastore.  The two levels of The Mill are brimming with goodies including retro speaker systems, homewares, kitchen cabinets, records, chairs, books, baskets, fishing rods, ladders, clothing, bikes, lamps, shoes, basins, rollerskates, chairs, fans, birdcages… You can even find giant plastic ice-creams in this place!
