No Frills

Vinyl Space

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP
Mid-range Good Quality Mid-size No Frills NO - PRIVATELY OWNED

Description

*See comment below from Mick.  Vinyl Space is now closed, however Micka has opened a new store located at 119a Johnston Street, Collingwood.  Enjoy!

I stumbled upon this terrific little store a few weekends ago when I was in search of some vintage pendant lights in Thornbury.  Vinyl Space is joint project between Michael Smajdor and Top Hat Antiques, which is located just down the road at 873 High Street.  The store is understated and could easily be missed if you’re experiencing some kind of hangover/post-brunch food coma, a condition I find myself afflicted with most weekends… Anyway, my point is you need to keep you’re eyes peeled.  Alongside the vinyl, there are some excellent lamps, canisters and a wonderfully retro record player.  For those too lazy to leave the comfort of their couch you can also check out the collection on the Vinyl Space website.

Community Chest – South Melbourne

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP
Cheap Hit and Miss Mid-size No Frills YES - NOT FOR PROFIT

Description

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the South Melbourne Community Chest.  This delightful opportunity shop is treasured by locals, not only for the sweet secondhand collection in store but also the great contribution it makes to the community.  The Community Chest is somewhat of an institution in these parts, it’s popularity means that stock is regularly turned over and you will always find something new on display.  All items for sale have been donated the proceeds are used to support local community groups, so you can indulge in a spot of shopping and know that you’re helping the community simultaneously – just excellent!

A recent Sunday drive to Williamstown led to the happy discovery One In a Mill in Newport.  The warehouse is located down a laneway off Melbourne Rd – blink and you will miss it – so keep your eyes peeled for the sandwich board that will direct you to this unassuming secondhand store.  Inside you will find all kinds of lovely things to play with and purchase – Pyrex bowls, chairs, sofa, massive old scales, large format drawers and much more!

Garage & sidewalk sales

On 27, Apr 2013 | One Comment | In $, 1, Carlton, Collingwood, Fitzroy, Massive, No Frills, Thornbury | By Rosie

Description

A curious phenomenon is taking place in the inner northern suburbs of Melbourne, and perhaps elsewhere.  I’m sure I’m not the only one who has noticed the increasing number of swap-meets, garage and sidewalk sales lining the pavements and median strip of these vibrant suburbs.  It seems that many Melbournians interested in recycling their worldly goods are opting to cut out the middle man (markets, op-shops and secondhand stores) and sell their wares directly to passing traffic.  Obviously the success of any such sale will likely be determined by the level of pedestrian (and  bicycle) traffic in the area.
