Circa Vintage Clothing

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP

Description

This vintage treasure trove on Gertrude Street is a testament to the depth of knowledge and commitment of its owner Nicole Jenkins.  There are around 1000 items in store, a further 1000 listed online and thousands more awaiting display.  The quality of stock in Circa is outstanding thanks to the great skill and attention that has been invested in restoring each item to its former glory.  Repairs and restorations are done in-house by Circa’s staff Nicole, Kate and Esther.  For me the highlight of this vintage store was the superlative collection of vintage hats – check them out!

The Verdict

What sets this store apart is Nicole Jenkins, who has spent much of her life collecting, learning and writing about all things vintage.  She is one of the few purveyors of vintage clothing in Melbourne who can tell you the era and origin from which an article came, for example she is able to distinguish between a true 1950s dress and a 1980s dress designed in 1950s style.  In addition to this Nicole is super friendly and demonstrates an enthusiasm for vintage goods that is infectious – check out the Circa blog for ‘how to’ tips, online shopping, events, forums and much more.  Keep an eye out for updates on a new Southland pop-up shop in the pipeline.

  1. Either the proprietor of this store is very rude or was having a very bad day today. I went to the store with my 18 year old granddaughter to buy her christmnas present. Everything we looked at we were told was too small, too delicate to try on or was waiting to be repaired and not for sale. Jokingly I remarked that the sales lady was very hard to deal with. I must add I am an aged care nurse and have never been rudevto anyone in my life. However the lady took offence and asked us to leave the store, adding she was eating her lunch and we were lucky to be in her store and have the benefit of her expertise. I apologized repeatedly, however my granddaughter left the store in disgust. She us involved in musical theater and spends a lot of money on vintage clothing. We went to another store and bought a dress worth $150. I don’t think we will go back to circa clothing in a hurry. NOT how to treat your prospective customers.

    • The above was at the lonsdale street store

  2. Hi Patricia,

I’m afraid that I’ve only just discovered your message above, and the passage of time has probably prevented you from reading my response but I’d just like to say that I’m sorry that you didn’t bring this to my attention at the time. It’s too long ago now for me to investigate who served you, and investigate why you had such an unpleasant experience but please allow me to apologise and if you’d like to get in touch with me (through my email or website above) I’ll do what I can do to make it right.

    all the best, Nicole
