$$ Price guide: mid-range
Retrostar has long been on the vintage hit list for Melbournians; located in the Nicholas Building on the corner of Swanston Street and Flinders Lane it is considered somewhat of an institution. The store and its collection have shrunk in size since I last visited, but comparatively it is still a very large. This first floor emporium is overflowing with bevy of apparel including clothing (women’s and men’s), hats, leather-goods, dresses, jackets, pants, skirts, shirts, ties, belts, hair clips… the list goes on. Strictly speaking not all the stock is second hand, some of the sunglasses, singlets and bags on display seem to be vintage in style and not actuality. While this mixing of new and old may not be to every vintage shopper’s taste it seems to hit the mark with Retrostar’s target demographic.
Retrostar is no doubt one of the most popular vintage stores in Melbourne. This is, at least in part, due to its location and accessibility – stores like this make vintage shopping approachable and less arduous for the vintage novice. All the hard work has been done for you, there is no rummaging to be done here. The garments and accessories are well organised however the shear volume of stock can be overwhelming, clearly Retrostar does not subscribe to the Miesian thinking “less is more”. There is a sense of the formulaic with this store – having said that, if you’re in the city this store is definitely worth a look.
