Vinyl Space

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP
Mid-range Good Quality Mid-size No Frills NO - PRIVATELY OWNED

Description

*See comment below from Mick.  Vinyl Space is now closed, however Micka has opened a new store located at 119a Johnston Street, Collingwood.  Enjoy!

I stumbled upon this terrific little store a few weekends ago when I was in search of some vintage pendant lights in Thornbury.  Vinyl Space is joint project between Michael Smajdor and Top Hat Antiques, which is located just down the road at 873 High Street.  The store is understated and could easily be missed if you’re experiencing some kind of hangover/post-brunch food coma, a condition I find myself afflicted with most weekends… Anyway, my point is you need to keep you’re eyes peeled.  Alongside the vinyl, there are some excellent lamps, canisters and a wonderfully retro record player.  For those too lazy to leave the comfort of their couch you can also check out the collection on the Vinyl Space website.

Description

This beautifully presented vintage store on High Street Northcote stocks a range of homewares and collectables from all over the globe, with French and Belgian pieces featuring prominently.  The owner, Penny Attwill, spent a number of years studying in France. During this time she developed a love of all things French and has since travelled back many times in search of items for her Melbourne store.  La Brocante also stocks a range of new giftware, cards, books and decorative bird houses which dominate the front of the store; most of the vintage wares are located at the rear.  Vintage highlights include number stamps, scales and European maps.

Community Chest – South Melbourne

Price Quality Size Vibe NFP
Cheap Hit and Miss Mid-size No Frills YES - NOT FOR PROFIT

Description

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the South Melbourne Community Chest.  This delightful opportunity shop is treasured by locals, not only for the sweet secondhand collection in store but also the great contribution it makes to the community.  The Community Chest is somewhat of an institution in these parts, it’s popularity means that stock is regularly turned over and you will always find something new on display.  All items for sale have been donated the proceeds are used to support local community groups, so you can indulge in a spot of shopping and know that you’re helping the community simultaneously – just excellent!

This post has been a long time coming.  I walk past Mode 707 on my lunch break most days and on the few occasions that I had remembered to bring my camera my attempts to review this fabulous vintage store were stymied by their Thursday -Sunday only opening hours.  But finally, last week it all fell into place and let me tell you it was worth the wait!  Inside is a delightful collection of homewares, furniture and electrical goods along with a series of beautiful black and white photographs of Melbourne back in its heyday.
